Dr. Christina Sunardi, professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Washington, will give a pre-movie lecture, followed by a presentation of Balinese dance by Ni Luh Saraswatini, all prior to the screening of the silent movie, Legong: Dance of the Virgins.

Dr. Christina Sunardi specializes in the performing arts of Java, Indonesia. Her other interests include dance, gender, interaction, and the performing arts of Bali. Sunardi has spent several years in central Java and east Java studying and performing gamelan music and dance. She has also made several trips to Bali. In the California Bay Area, she has studied and performed Javanese music and dance with Gamelan Sari Raras as well as Balinese music and dance with Gamelan Sekar Jaya. She currently plays with the Seattle-based Javanese ensemble Gamelan Pacifica and is teaching east Javanese gamelan at Seattle Pacific University.

Ni Luh Saraswatini, born and raised in Bali, has been dancing since she was 5 years old and holds a diploma in dance education from the University of Udayana, Bali. Saraswatini has lived in the U.S. since 1992 and regularly performs Balinese dance in the community.

Selected dancers will perform on July 9-10, 2010 @ The Paramount Theatre in Bhangra Fever, a contemporary piece by Donald Byrd (Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theater). Dancers and persons with Parkinson’s both need to stretch and strengthen their bodies, use eyes, ears and touch to control movement, think about how they move and constantly work on balance. Seattle-based instructors will teach ongoing dance classes for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers (modeled from Mark Morris Dance Group in Brooklyn, NY). The Nrityagram Indian Dance Ensemble is regarded worldwide as one of the foremost dance companies of India. The ensemble will be performing “Odissi,” a traditional temple dance from Northeast India. Master Class- Introduction to Odissi Classical Indian Dance

Charnin (Artistic Director of Showtunes) originated the role Big Deal in WEST SIDE STORY on Broadway, and sang “Gee, Officer Krupke” for 1000 performances. The DANCE This Summer Training Intensive is an opportunity for young dancers (ages 13-21) at all levels to immerse themselves in dance over the course of two weeks. Students will be exposed to a wide range of dance styles and techniques in a supportive, yet challenging atmosphere. Instruction includes ballet, modern, jazz, Afro-Latin, African, hip-hop and special workshops. Registration begins FALL 2009. For more information, email Education.

DANCE This Camp @ Centrum

Centrum in Port Townsend, WA

Open to high school students, DANCE This Camp @ Centrum is an opportunity for young dancers at all levels to study dance for one week in beautiful Port Townsend, WA.  Styles include ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, social and African dance.   • Alley Cat Theatre
    A series of performances featuring local performers. More information to come.

  • Black Achievers Program Partnership
    STG partners with the Meredith Matthews YMCA Black Achievers Program to expose students to a wide range of performing arts programs. Activities for participants include on-site participatory workshops in music, dance and theatre, a Careers in the Arts presentation and attendance at six STG presentations at the Paramount and Moore Theatres throughout the 2008-2009 season.

  • In-school Workshops and Residencies
    Interested in a hands-on arts experience for students at your school? STG offers residencies available in cultural and contemporary dance and music with Northwest-based artists. Arts instruction is available to suit your school’s interests and needs—varying from a one-time workshop to multiple week residency. Activities are in line with Washington State Arts EALRS and are tailored to students' skill level and ages.

  • Historic Tours of The Paramount and Moore Theatres
    Seattle Theatre Group gives the public a chance to learn more about the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres while giving them a glimpse behind the scenes. Free; once a month; the first Saturday of every month at 10am at The Paramount & the second Saturday of every month at 10am at The Moore Theatre. For more information, click here.

  • Student Tours: STG offers free tours of the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres for educators and students ages seven and up. Tour guides introduce students to theatre architecture, design, history and technical aspects. Schedule tours upon request for student groups.

  • Theatre Access Program (TAP)
    STG annually provides thousands of tickets to performances at The Paramount and Moore Theatres to school groups, youth organizations, community centers, social service organizations, young artists and seniors who would otherwise be unable to afford the opportunity. To apply, click here.

  • The Young Choreographers Lab
    The Young Choreographers Lab is for teens interested in pursuing their artistic vision as choreographers as well as dancers. Up to 20 teens are selected each year to investigate movement invention. In the fall, participants meet once a week, for eight weeks for choreography master classes and in the spring selected choreographers create a larger work—all with the mentorship of leading Seattle choreographers.
